This Sunday in the Church Year is known as Quinquagesima– the Latin word for “50.” It marks 50 days before the Resurrection of our Lord and is the last of the pre-Lent Sundays. The teaching for the day is Love: in all its glory and wonder, the love of God to man, the love of man to God, and in Christ, the love of man to his fellow. The emphasis of this Sunday is how we are saved by faith alone (“Sola Fide”). We look straight ahead to the goal of the next 50 days: Holy Week, with Jesus’ suffering and dying, and Easter with His glorious resurrection which we share by faith.
