The season of Advent is all about the coming of our Lord. With the first Sunday in Advent, the Gospel recounts the coming of Jesus into Jerusalem, the city where he would die to pay for our sins. Thus we remember at the beginning of the season the reason he came the first time: as a baby conceived by the Holy Spirit in the womb of the Virgin Mary, born on Christmas in the stable in Bethlehem.
We also remember the reason he will come again at the End if the World, to judge the living and the dead.
And further, we remember the reason he continues to come to us in his Word, in the Sacrament of Baptism, and in the Sacrament of Holy Communion, the Supper of his Body and Blood. He came, comes, and will come, to save us from our sins, taking their punishment onto himself and giving us his righteousness.
